Ateneo Bomb Threat
Wednesday, Feb 12, 2014, 9:02 PMThese past few weeks, I have been spending some time walking around Ateneo, taking in the marvelous view of the campus in an attempt to fully commit it to my brain -- the vernal grass decorating the sidewalks, the chartreuse butterflies near Schmitt in the morning, the sunlight peeking through the branches of the trees in SOM forest at 7:20 AM, and the numerous brick roads that lead me from one class to the next. Aside from these bits of nature, the varying designs of the buildings look equally refreshing. But more refreshing than anything are the people with whom I spend my time in there. Ah, senioritis perhaps.
When I received the text message from ADMU regarding the bomb threat, I couldn't help but imagine what the campus would be like if one did blow up in there *knock on wood* and then it made me realize how much I have been taking it for granted during my four-year stay there. I'm glad it's not too late. And I hope that such a threat would not happen again.
Let Go and Let God
Tuesday, Jan 21, 2014, 11:58 AMEver since my first year in university, I often got to ride on a certain jeepney with a very uplifting button pin on its dashboard. It reads "Let go and let God". I came across it again this morning, now as a senior, and realized how those four simple words always came at the right time for me across my four years in college.
Thank you for the constant reminder.
Friday, Nov 29, 2013, 10:28 PMThis afternoon, I spent about thirty minutes waiting in line to pay for some items. I've experienced waiting for a longer time before, but this particularly struck me to an extent.
No, it isn't because of the numbing sensation from standing up too long. It's because of what I heard from the person right behind me. "Hassle magka-nanay (It's such a hassle to have a mother)," he had said to his companion. The sentences that followed revealed that it was his mom who asked him to purchase a few things before going home. Then, he shifted to the topic of parties that he plans to attend in the near future.
I'm sorry mister, but I respectfully disagree. It's much more of a hassle to carry a human being in the womb for nine months and get ripped or cut up to let that person into this world. Don't even get me started on waking up in the middle of the night to change diapers, paying for more or less sixteen years worth of tuition, and putting up with several foolish actions that the child makes along the way to adulthood. Or even further into adulthood.
It's much more of a hassle to raise a child. So if the only way to repay my mom is to wait in line for thirty minutes, give me thirty hours instead.
And to that guy, I hope it's not much of a hassle for you to find time to show your mom that she means more to you than a few items from the store. Before it's too late.
